It was winter, but the sun was still warm enough to sit at a table, in the street outside the cafe. Rick sat with his back to the sun. Looking into the sun always made his head hurt. It was his lunch break and he had bought some food, but he hadn't touched it. It was one of those days when he just didn't feel like eating.

Encouraged by the thought, he flicked open his laptop. There was a flight leaving tonight, could he really do this? His carefully planned career was on track, if he could just push through, but the thought of that made him feel so empty on the inside. With the click of a
button he could be free to explore all sorts of other possibilities. His finger hovered over
the ‘BUY NOW’ button he sighed, closed his laptop and went back to work.

Buoyed by the prospect of that, he gulped down the remnants of his coffee and flicked open his laptop. There was a flight leaving tonight (could he be so impetuous?) He had never been a risk taker, his carefully plotted career path had brought him to this point, he just had to preserve. The prospect of that was overwhelming. He could be free to explore endless new options. The cursor blinked on the ‘BUY NOW’ button. His finger hovered over ‘ENTER’ he sighed, closed his laptop and went back to work.

Excerpts from   StoryByte #16: Going Home   www.sharpreading.com

When the little girl open the door of her grandmother’s house, she saw that there was somebody in bed with a nightcap and night gown on. She had approached no nearer than twenty-five feet from the bed when she saw that it was not her grandmother but the wolf. So the little girl took an automatic pistol out of her basket and shot the wolf dead.

It cast a gloom over the boat, there been no mustard. We ate our beef in silence. Existence seemed hollow and uninteresting.
